Memorial Day

Memorial Day at Tall Timbers Marina

White Point Yacht Club was well represented at the Tall Timbers annual Memorial Day celebration this year. Our Fleet Captain, Jeff Wallace, his wife Vicky (Snake Eyes), Cathy and Jon Hartwell (Legend), Jim and Maryellen Colston (Star Gazer), and Rick and Mary Beth Bearden (Pogemehone) all made the trip. Bob and Cynthia Futtrell (Liquidity) planned to attend but at the last minute engine trouble kept them at White Point. Each year Tall Timbers plans a weekend long celebration that includes live music each night, great food, excellent drinks, and a boat burning! This year’s celebration was no exception but included some additional entertainment. All day Saturday we watched several new arrivals go aground as they cut inside the channel marker into Tall Timbers’ very shallow waters. It was fun to watch the various methods used to get back underway.

Saturday evening the WPYC representatives had our own happy hour next to the docks. We each brought our own snacks and drinks and swapped stories.

However, while White Point was well represented, the prize for best attendance has to go Prince William Marina. Their contingent took up most of the A Pier at Tall Timbers and their presence was not easily missed! And fortunately, their music choices are, for the most part enjoyable so we all benefited from their powerful speakers. Apparently, Prince William boaters are all dog lovers so there were plenty of playmates for the Tall Timbers canines, and we only observed one smelly indiscretion on the dock.

We all enjoyed the boat burning Sunday night and the fireworks that accompanied it. Tall Timbers also sets up a bar on the beach to prevent anyone from getting a dry mouth! This year’s boat was the largest, most intact one burned to date so it provided us with a great show. And it was still smoldering when we passed it on our way back to White Point Monday morning. Once back at White Point we couldn’t help but wonder who will be attending the Tall Timbers Labor Day celebration.
